Short answer (checked 7 October 2026): Ozempic and Wegovy both contain semaglutide, but they are not the same Australian regulatory or PBS proposition. The TGA describes Ozempic as a type 2 diabetes medicine and Wegovy as a chronic weight-management medicine. Ozempic has PBS listings for eligible type 2 diabetes use; Wegovy’s official medicine-status record, current 1 October 2026, says PBS listing has not yet occurred.

Same ingredient does not mean same status.
Brand, presentation, approved indication and PBS restriction all matter. Never transfer the approval or subsidy statement for one brand to the other.

Is Ozempic approved for weight loss in Australia?

The TGA’s Australian class summary describes Ozempic as approved for managing type 2 diabetes, while Wegovy is the semaglutide brand approved for chronic weight management. This distinction is often lost in search snippets that discuss only the ingredient.

Off-label prescribing questions do not alter the registered indication and require individual professional assessment. This guide does not provide that assessment.

Is Ozempic on the PBS?

Ozempic is PBS-listed for eligible people with type 2 diabetes under defined restrictions. That is not a general weight-loss subsidy. The restriction—not merely the presence of a PBS item—is the decisive record.

Is Wegovy on the PBS?

No, according to the official medicine-status record current 1 October 2026. PBAC recommended a restricted listing in November 2025 for adults with established cardiovascular disease and obesity, subject to pricing and other arrangements. The status page still recorded documentation as not accepted, listing processes as not commenced and listing as not yet occurred.

Why two semaglutide brands have different answers

  1. Registration is product-specific. The ARTG entry identifies brand, sponsor, presentation and indication.
  2. Evidence packages differ. A regulator assesses the submitted product and claimed use.
  3. PBAC evaluates a proposed population and restriction. A recommendation may be narrower than the TGA indication.
  4. PBS listing is item-specific. Subsidy only operates when the item and restriction are live.

Approval, recommendation and listing

Statement What it means What it does not mean
TGA approved The specific product is registered for an approved indication Government subsidy
PBAC recommended The committee supported a proposed listing subject to conditions The product is already on the PBS
PBS listed A live item and restriction define subsidy Every prescription or use is subsidised

How to verify the status yourself

  1. Search the ARTG by the exact brand, not only “semaglutide”.
  2. Read the Australian Product Information for the approved indication.
  3. Search the live PBS schedule and open the restriction.
  4. For Wegovy, check the date on the PBS medicine-status page.
  5. Re-check after PBAC cycles because recommendations and listing progress can change.

Frequently asked questions

Are Ozempic and Wegovy the same medicine?

They share semaglutide as the active ingredient, but their Australian product registrations, indications and PBS positions differ.

Can Ozempic’s PBS listing be used for Wegovy?

No. PBS listings are product- and restriction-specific.

Has Wegovy been “approved for the PBS”?

PBAC recommended a restricted listing, but the official record current 1 October 2026 says listing had not occurred.

Does TGA approval guarantee pharmacy stock?

No. Registration, subsidy and local availability are separate questions.

Does this guide say which is better?

No. “Better” depends on indication, evidence, safety and individual circumstances. That requires clinical assessment.
