Current answer (checked 7 October 2026): Wegovy is TGA-approved in Australia for chronic weight management, and PBAC recommended a restricted PBS listing for a defined group with established cardiovascular disease and obesity. However, the official medicine-status record—information current 1 October 2026—says PBS listing has not yet occurred.
A positive PBAC recommendation is an important step, but patients do not receive PBS subsidy until pricing, documentation and government processes are completed and the item appears in the PBS schedule.
Wegovy Australia: the three statuses
| System | Status | Plain-English meaning |
|---|---|---|
| TGA / ARTG | Approved and marketed | Wegovy is an authorised prescription medicine for chronic weight management under its approved indication. |
| PBAC | Recommended, November 2025 | PBAC supported a restricted listing for adults with established cardiovascular disease and obesity. |
| PBS schedule | Not listed as of the record current 1 October 2026 | The recommended subsidy was not yet operational. |
This is a public-record explainer, not advice about eligibility, prescribing or treatment.
Is Wegovy on the PBS right now?
No. The PBS medicine-status page for semaglutide (Wegovy) states that listing has not yet occurred. Its progress fields also say documentation had not been accepted, listing arrangements had not commenced and government processes had not commenced at the record’s 1 October 2026 update.
This is more precise than saying Wegovy was simply “approved” or “recommended”. Those words describe earlier gates in Australia’s medicine system.
Who did the PBAC recommendation concern?
The November 2025 recommendation concerned a restricted population: adults with established cardiovascular disease and obesity. It was not a blanket recommendation for every person seeking chronic weight management. The eventual PBS restriction—if and when listing occurs—must be read from the live PBS schedule, not inferred from headlines.
Wegovy PBS timeline
- March 2022: an earlier obesity submission was not recommended.
- November 2025: PBAC recommended restricted listing for people with established cardiovascular disease and obesity.
- February 2026: the sponsor’s intent and administrative progress were reflected in the public process.
- 1 October 2026: the official medicine-status record still said documentation was not accepted and listing had not occurred.
- 7 October 2026: this guide rechecked that dated record and found no evidence that the recommendation had become a PBS listing.
Why Wegovy and Ozempic have different PBS answers
Both contain semaglutide, but brand, formulation, approved indication and PBS restriction matter. Ozempic has PBS listings for type 2 diabetes under specific restrictions. That does not make Wegovy PBS-listed for obesity, and it does not make one brand interchangeable with the other for a particular person.

What has to happen before a PBS listing?
- The sponsor and government complete the required documentation.
- Pricing, restriction wording and listing arrangements are settled.
- Government approval processes are completed.
- An effective date and item appear in the PBS schedule.
Because negotiations can change timing or wording, a PBAC recommendation should never be converted into a predicted listing date unless an official source provides one.
How to check Wegovy status in two minutes
- Open the PBS medicine-status record and note its “information current” date.
- Search the live PBS schedule for both “Wegovy” and “semaglutide”.
- Read the indication and restriction; do not transfer Ozempic’s diabetes status to Wegovy.
- Use TGA Product Information for approved indications and safety, not subsidy.
Frequently asked questions
Has PBAC approved Wegovy?
PBAC recommended a restricted listing in November 2025. PBAC makes recommendations; the TGA grants market approval and the PBS schedule confirms subsidy.
When will Wegovy be on the PBS?
The official record used here does not provide a listing date. Publishing a guess would be misleading.
Is Ozempic’s PBS listing transferable to Wegovy?
No. PBS items are tied to products, indications and restrictions.
Does a positive recommendation guarantee listing?
No. Documentation, pricing and government processes must still be completed.
Does this guide determine whether someone qualifies?
No. Eligibility can only be assessed against the live restriction after listing and in an appropriate clinical context.
