Search clarification: reports about “Mounjaro Australia supply negotiations” concern PBS reimbursement and price negotiations, not evidence that Australia has run out of physical stock. Check the TGA shortages database separately for supply availability.
Safety status is also separate from subsidy status. See our Australian Mounjaro and NAION warning explainer for the TGA’s July 2026 eye-safety assessment.
Mounjaro Australia status at a glance
TGA status
Approved and marketed in Australia for type 2 diabetes and chronic weight management, subject to the approved Product Information.
PBS status
Not listed as at this 8 October 2026 check. A positive PBAC recommendation does not itself create a subsidised PBS item.
Negotiation status
Pricing and risk-sharing talks stalled in April. In August, Lilly said it remained interested in a deal and open to alternative arrangements.
Confirmed listing date
None. A future deal, government announcement and live PBS item would be needed before the answer changes.
This page explains public regulatory and reimbursement records. It is not prescribing, suitability or dosing advice.
What changed in 2026?
The public story has two stages that should not be collapsed. The PBS medicine-status record preserves the earlier November 2024 decision, when PBAC did not recommend the diabetes submission. Later reporting in April 2026 said PBAC had recommended subsidising tirzepatide for adults with inadequately controlled type 2 diabetes. The manufacturer then declined to proceed on the proposed commercial terms, so recommendation did not become listing.
The Australian decision path
TGA approval → sponsor PBS submission → PBAC recommendation → price and risk-sharing agreement → legal/administrative listing → live PBS item
Mounjaro’s reported 2026 position: it progressed to a positive PBAC recommendation for a defined diabetes population, then stalled before the commercial agreement and listing steps.
Mounjaro PBS negotiations timeline
| Date | What happened | What it established |
|---|---|---|
| November 2024 | PBAC did not recommend the earlier type 2 diabetes submission. | The proposal at that meeting did not proceed to listing. |
| 1 April 2026 | The official PBS medicine-status case still recorded the earlier decision and no listing. | Mounjaro was not a PBS medicine at that checkpoint. |
| 28 April 2026 | ABC reported that PBAC had recommended subsidy for adults with inadequately controlled type 2 diabetes, but negotiations had stalled and Lilly would not proceed on the proposed terms. | A later recommendation existed, but recommendation and listing were still different stages. |
| 12 August 2026 | Lilly’s chief executive told ABC that the company still wanted PBS listing and was open to further or adaptive arrangements, while price remained unresolved. | The door to a deal was open, but no agreement or listing date was announced. |
| 8 October 2026 | Our source check found no live PBS listing or confirmed commencement date. | The accurate current answer remains: TGA-approved, not PBS-listed. |
Is Mounjaro on the PBS for diabetes?
No—not at this source check. The important nuance is that a later positive PBAC recommendation was reported for a defined type 2 diabetes population, but the sponsor and government did not complete the commercial agreement required before listing. “PBAC recommended” and “PBS listed” are not synonyms.
PBAC considers comparative clinical effectiveness, safety, cost-effectiveness, budget impact and the proposed restriction. After a positive recommendation, confidential price and risk-sharing arrangements may still need to be negotiated. A medicine only becomes subsidised when the remaining steps are completed and a live PBS item exists.
Is Mounjaro on the PBS for weight loss?
No PBS obesity listing was identified. The TGA-approved weight-management indication does not create PBS subsidy. PBAC’s published obesity-access advice said the sponsor had not submitted a tirzepatide obesity listing at the time of that advice. Diabetes and obesity reimbursement questions must therefore be checked separately.
Were the negotiations about medicine supply?
Not in the reports driving this search interest. They concerned the price and financial-risk conditions for PBS reimbursement. Physical availability is a different question and should be checked through the TGA Medicine Shortages Reports Database and a pharmacist. A pricing dispute can affect affordability without proving a national stock shortage.
What a future listing would require
- A commercial agreement: the sponsor and Australian Government would need to settle price and any risk-sharing conditions.
- Final listing steps: documentation, legal and administrative processes would need to be completed.
- A live PBS item: the schedule would identify the subsidised indication, patient criteria, authority requirements and commencement date.
Until those steps occur, headlines about willingness to negotiate should not be rewritten as “Mounjaro is coming to the PBS”.
How to verify the status yourself
- Search the TGA’s Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods for the product and approved indication.
- Search the live PBS schedule for “tirzepatide” and “Mounjaro”.
- Open the PBAC/PBS medicine-status record and note its information-current date.
- Check whether a report describes a recommendation, a commercial agreement or an actual listing.
- For stock availability, use the TGA shortages database rather than reimbursement news.
Frequently asked questions
Did PBAC recommend Mounjaro in 2026?
ABC reported on 28 April 2026 that PBAC had recommended subsidy for adults with inadequately controlled type 2 diabetes. That later development does not erase the older medicine-status page; it explains why relying only on the 2024 decision gives an incomplete current picture.
Why is Mounjaro still not on the PBS after a recommendation?
A PBAC recommendation is a gateway, not the final listing. The reported obstacle was disagreement over price and financial-risk conditions.
Is there a confirmed PBS date?
No confirmed commencement date was identified at the 8 October 2026 check.
Does “not PBS-listed” mean Mounjaro is illegal?
No. PBS status concerns subsidy. TGA approval and lawful prescription supply are separate matters.
Does this page recommend tirzepatide?
No. Suitability, contraindications, adverse effects and treatment choices require individual clinical assessment.
