On 15 October 2026, the European Medicines Agency’s human medicines committee recommended marketing authorisation for Foundayo (orforglipron) for adult weight management and type 2 diabetes. The October CHMP meeting record lists the medicine as pending a European Commission decision. A positive committee opinion is an important regulatory milestone; the final authorisation is a separate step.
The distinction matters because Foundayo already has a US approval. The FDA announced its weight-management approval on 1 April 2026. The European recommendation and the American decision concern different jurisdictions and need to be described separately.

Foundayo status: which authority made which decision?
| Record | Verified event | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| European Union | CHMP positive opinion, 15 October 2026; pending EC decision in the October meeting record | Recommendation for authorisation; retain the pending-decision wording until the final decision is verified. |
| United States | FDA approval announced 1 April 2026 | Approval for weight management in the defined adult population and labelled context. |
| Australia | Australian registration and subsidy require Australian records | Neither overseas event creates an ARTG entry, PBS listing or Australian medicine approval. |
What is orforglipron?
Orforglipron is an oral, non-peptide small-molecule GLP-1 receptor agonist, as described in the FDA review record. Foundayo is the finished-medicine brand described in the regulator records. Sharing a receptor target with another medicine does not make their active substances, formulations or approved uses interchangeable.
“GLP-1” describes a biological signalling pathway and drug class; it does not mean every member is a peptide or an injection. Chemistry, route and regulatory product identity each need their own description. An online chemical using the same ingredient name is not established as equivalent to the authorised finished medicine.
What does the European opinion cover?
The EMA record describes a recommendation for adult weight management and type 2 diabetes. Its opinion and subsequent product information define the proposed populations and conditions. The October meeting highlights identify Eli Lilly Nederland B.V. as the applicant and link to the pending-decision record.
This is a regulatory assessment milestone. It should be distinguished from a sponsor’s trial announcement, the registration of a new study and a final European Commission authorisation. This briefing does not compare efficacy percentages across separate trials.
What does the US decision cover?
The FDA’s April announcement describes weight management alongside diet and physical activity in adults with obesity, or overweight with at least one weight-related comorbidity. The announcement discusses the trials supporting that decision and the medicine’s warnings. US approval should be stated with its actual indication, rather than expanded to every possible diabetes or weight-related use.
Approval also does not establish suitability for every individual. The current official label remains the source for the finished medicine’s indication, limitations and safety information.
How should Australian readers interpret this?
Australia has its own product register and funding process. The ARTG identifies Australian therapeutic-good entries, while a current PBS item and restriction answer the subsidy question. An overseas announcement cannot substitute for either.
Our TGA, ARTG, PBAC and PBS guide explains those distinctions. Use the Australian GLP-1 overview for the existing local comparison and the clinical-trial results tracker for evidence-stage interpretation.
